PROJECT OVERVIEW: This was a collaborative project with Azeez Fusiboye, a Nigerian Marketing and Events Promoter based in Toronto, for Afrobeats icon and Nigerian musician Davido.
The project intended to create a connection and unity between the Toronto culture, represented by the Raptors Jersey, and the Afrobeats culture.
Davido’s new album, A Good Time, had just been released and he was expected to have a concert in Toronto in the later months of Spring that year (2020).
In order to promote his upcoming concert, Azeez Fusiboye asked me to paint and customize the jersey based on Davido’s new album and cover art, because they are quite personal to the artist himself and depicts him with all his loved ones.
The shirt was custom hand-painted on both sides, the first side is based on his album “A Good Time” released in 2020, and the second side is based on “A Better Time” released the following year in 2021.
In order to help support and raise awareness for Davido and his upcoming concert, Azeez Fusiboye would ask individuals he met in the streets of Toronto to sign the shirt, regardless of whether they knew the artist. After people would sign the shirt, there would be an increased awareness and recognition of the artist, the concert, and his contribution to the Afrobeats community.
The artist received the shirt in 2020 in Nigeria, before COVID-19, but returned the shirt in hopes of wearing it in Toronto during his next concert.
