HONEST DEAD: SERIES OF SEVEN

Honest Dead 1/7 (2017)

These series of photographs depict the changes in the social development of the once famous Honest Ed warehouse and Mirvish Village neighbourhood.

The series was meant to provide a sense of the different treatment to the particular area, a once flourishing cultural neighbourhood to an abandoned haunting one. The pictures depict the semi demolished buildings in comparison to the archived photos of the area in the 1970s.

My intention with the piece was to provide an understanding of the importance of culture within the city as well as historical preservation. The piece addresses the cultural and social issue of Toronto’s lack of historical and cultural preservation due to the inflated need for condominiums and investment buildings.

With the use of lighting and colour enhancement I was able to create scenes of colourful yet haunting buildings that although seem to be full of life but when looked upon closer, have the sense of abandonment and emptiness.
