The Joy of Life, A Graphic Design Study by a Visual Artist- Vector Illustration (2021)

GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDY BY VISUAL ARTIST

ROLE:

Creative Director and Graphic Designer

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

With this project, I wanted to get familiar with using the Pen Tool on Adobe Illustrator whilst developing the notion of finding simple geometric shapes within spacial planes.

The idea of Fauvism uses colour and flat planar scenes to depict space and forms. However, the idea of using shapes to determine space and form is something that Cubism managed to completely elevate. I wanted to combine the inspiring principles learned through the applications of the Fauvism and Cubist movements. However, I want to approach it with a modern tool and medium. This study is based off of Fauvist painter Henri Mattise’s Le bonheur de vivre (La Joie de vivre). Pablo Picasso made his own rendition of the piece from a Cubist perspective but used his own artistic influences and approaches (such as the iconic Blue style and Cubist fragmented simplifications of the scenes, completely taking away any presence of “body and mass”).

In my study and rendition of the piece, I still wanted to preserve the vibrant colours and plains of the original piece whilst seeing how the organic curvaceous forms would transform into fragmented shapes and plains.
