This is a Graphic Design study by a Visual Artist. It is titled that because that is exactly what it is. I wanted to get familiar with using the Pen Tool on Adobe Illustrator as well as get into the notion of finding shapes within spacial planes. The idea of fauvism, uses colour and flat planar scenes in order to depict space and forms. However, the idea of using shapes to determine space and form, is something that cubism managed to completely elevate. I wanted to combine the Art History principles learned/inspired by the applications of the Fauvism and Cubist movement however I wanted to approach it with a modern tool and medium. This study is based off of Fauvist painter Henri Mattise’s Le bonheur de vivre (La Joie de vivre). Pablo Picasso actually made his own rendition of the piece from a cubist perspective but used his own artistic influences and approaches (such as the iconic Blue style and Cubist Fragemented/Simplifications of the scenes completely taking away any presence of “body/mass”). In my study and rendition of the piece, I still wanted to preserve the vibrant colours and plains of the original piece as well as see how the organic curvaceous forms would transform into triangular shapes and fragments.
